Tony Jerfita spent 35 years in the corporate technology sales world before he wanted out. His new industry was probably not one he would have predicted he’d be entering later in his career.

Tony and his wife, Missy Jerfita, are the new owners of an Amazing Lash Studio franchise at the Willow Festival shopping center. Their main service: Applying eyelash extensions.

Leaving a sales job for a field filled with aestheticians and cosmetologists certainly seems like a left turn out of nowhere, but Tony doesn’t see it that way. After he and Missy ran into friends of theirs who owned Amazing Lash locations in the western suburbs, they realized they were looking at an untapped gold mine of sorts in the North Shore, an “unpenetrated” market to take advantage of. And when they got wind that Wags on Willow, the pet grooming salon, was vacating its space at 840 Willow Road, they pounced on what they saw as a prime location.

“Retail is location, location, location,” said Tony, who will be running operations.

The Jerfitas knew they wanted a business that didn’t sell food or something that could be bought online. Tony also pointed to the “instant satisfaction” he gets from helping beautify customers as an advantage over his previous job.

“Every lady that walks out of that door is just overwhelmed with excitement,” he said. “That’s just something I never appreciated in the industry I was in. You sell software, you don’t see a reaction. Here you do.”

He and his wife, both Glenview residents, have 12 people on staff and want to increase that to 20 as their clientele grows. Each worker undergoes two weeks of specialized training before they can work with clients. Each extension is applied via adhesive to a single eyelash without touching skin. An introductory session costs $89.99 and will take 90 minutes to two hours, according to Missy, who will continue her full-time job as a realtor while handling marketing for the family business.

“I think I have a good idea of what women would like to see and like to try,” she said. “I think this is the next step. Ladies would now and then get their nails done, and now it’s very widespread, and I think the lashes are going to be very similar. I think once you start with lashes it can be very addicting because it’s so beautiful. ... It’s instant gratification compared to a facial or some other procedures.”

Lashes come in different lengths and thicknesses. Customers can choose from four styles: gorgeous, sexy, cute and natural.

Amazing Lash is now open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. There will be a special ceremony Thursday, July 13, to celebrate the opening. For details visit www.facebook.com/amazinglashstudionorthbrook.
